Reverence of nature is a main tenet of the Arts and Crafts movement. My inspiration for "Preyer Cloth" came from two sources: reading Carl Safina's Alfie and Me: What Owls Know, What Humans Believe,  and CFA Voysey’s repeat print "Let Us Prey." Both acknowledge the interconnections of all beings.
Visually the Arts and Crafts style called for a move away from realistic representation toward a conventionalization of form. The textile techniques of applique, simple embroidery stitches and expressive lines are a natural application. Embroidered banners were frequently made to promote social causes at the turn-of-the-century, being more enduring than posters and offering usefulness in pageantry. Texture and color also play a major role toward creating the desired effect evoking a woodland scene by choosing rustic yet elegant materials.
"Preyer Cloth" is included in the exhibit  Art Movements in Fiber
